The three Samsung LED chips, LM101B, LH181B, and LH231B, utilize a chip-scale packaging solution with rounded-edge enhancement technology (FEC) to achieve industry-leading luminous efficacy.
Initially, Chip-Scale Package (CSP) LED technology did not gain widespread adoption in the mainstream LED lighting market due to its relatively low luminous efficacy. However, this upgraded FEC series of Samsung LED chips, with its superior luminous efficacy, successfully adapts to various mainstream lighting applications, including ambient lighting, downlights, spotlights, high-bay lights, ceiling lights, and streetlights.
Choi Yoon-jun, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ LED Business Division, stated, “Since introducing CSP technology to the industry in 2014, we have consistently focused on improving the performance and design adaptability of each CSP LED. In the future, Samsung will continue to strengthen its competitive advantage in CSP technology, providing global lighting manufacturers with high-performance, reliable, and cost-effective lighting design solutions.”
This enhanced FEC LED is based on Samsung LED Chip’s latest generation CSP technology, which achieves upward light output by constructing titanium dioxide (TiO₂) walls on the sides of the chip. Compared to traditional CSP LEDs, this technology not only significantly improves luminous efficacy but also gives lighting designers greater design flexibility. At the same time, crosstalk between adjacent packages is greatly reduced, allowing for closer arrangement of the packages.
Thanks to these technological breakthroughs, the upgraded FEC LED package has reached the industry’s top level in luminous efficacy, meeting the needs of a wider range of lighting applications. Among them, the medium-power CSP LED model Samsung LED Chip LM101B, under conditions of 65mA driving current, color rendering index of 80+, and color temperature of 5000K, achieves a luminous efficacy of 205 lm/W, firmly ranking first among 1W class medium-power CSP LED products; the 3W class LH181B, at 350mA driving current, color rendering index of 70+, and color temperature of 5000K, boasts a luminous efficacy of up to 190 lm/W, leading its class and representing an improvement of over 10% compared to the previous generation; the 5W class Samsung LED Chip LH231B package, under operating conditions of 700mA driving current, color rendering index of 70+, and color temperature of 5000K, still maintains a luminous efficacy of 170 lm/W, also setting a new industry record for luminous efficacy in this power level.
Thanks to the compact size and low crosstalk characteristics brought about by FEC technology, the Samsung LED Chip LM101B is particularly suitable for spotlighting applications – scenarios that require high-density arrangement within a small light-emitting area. In addition, Samsung has optimized the electrode pad design, making the installation process of the LM101B simpler compared to other medium-power CSP LEDs.
It is worth noting that the Samsung LED Chip LH181B has a maximum operating current of up to 1.4A, making it an ideal choice for LED luminaires requiring high lumen density.
