The horticultural lighting industry is experiencing rapid growth as the future of scalable food production becomes an increasingly important issue. Growers are seeking high-quality sunlight alternatives as a key component of modern indoor agricultural environments. To meet these needs, LED manufacturers are fiercely competing to develop horticultural lighting solutions that can effectively improve plant growth. In line with this trend, Samsung has released a plant-centric spectrum LED specifically designed for indoor agriculture.
Horticultural lighting has been developed based on human lighting and has not been rigorously examined on how effectively light supports the overall development of plants. This type of examination goes beyond just the physical growth of plants, considering factors such as crop freshness and its nutrient composition. While photosynthetic photon flux (PPF, which measures the number of photosynthetically active photons emitted per second by a lighting system) has previously been the sole criterion for evaluating horticultural lighting performance, new research shows that the spectrum has a significant impact on plant growth.
Based on this research, Samsung has leveraged its world-class spectral engineering technology to develop a true horticultural light source with a spectral peak of 437 nm, providing industry-leading PPE to improve plant growth and enhance crop quality. Samsung’s innovative plant-centric spectrum LED significantly enhances photosynthesis in existing horticultural lighting solutions, resulting in better, more holistic plant growth. Its 437 nm spectral peak, shorter than the wavelength of conventional horticultural white LEDs, also stimulates secondary metabolites such as phenols and flavonols, thereby improving the nutritional quality of plants. Furthermore, this newly designed spectrum effectively inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, resulting in longer-lasting storage. Finally, its industry-leading PPE consumes minimal energy, contributing to long-term energy savings and reducing operating costs for indoor farms.
To quantitatively evaluate Samsung’s new plant-centric spectrum, Samsung and Gyeongsang National University conducted a six-week joint experiment examining the effectiveness of various horticultural light sources on overall plant growth. The experiment compared four different types of LED lighting, including Samsung’s LM301H EVO series, which uses this plant-centric spectrum.
Dr. Ki-Ho Son of Gyeongsang National University, who led the experiment, explained, “LED lighting is not only more efficient and durable, but its greatest advantage is that we can specifically design its spectrum to optimize plant growth. Our experiments show that the LM301H EVO series, using a shorter wavelength plant-centric spectrum, promotes higher physical and quality growth than ordinary white LEDs or combinations of blue and red LEDs. Plants grown under the plant-centric spectrum have larger, thicker leaves and higher nutrient levels.”
Mike Mang, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ LED Business Team, stated, “Our newly launched product line is designed to meet the needs of horticulturists who seek stronger, more valuable crops while consuming less energy.” He continued, “Gardening lighting based on our new plant-centric spectrum will enable growers to experience a higher level of agriculture by producing more and higher quality products, while saving costs. We intend to continue developing Samsung’s spectral engineering technology to provide innovative LED lighting solutions for a wider range of spaces, from indoor living spaces to the larger horticultural industry.”
