Seoul Semiconductor, an international LED specialist, has developed a groundbreaking next-generation product, the WICOP UHL (Ultra High Luminance) series of LEDs. This product reduces power consumption in electric vehicle headlights by 20% and improves heat dissipation by 40%. The company began mass production of this LED in 2021 and is promoting it to key strategic customers.

Given the characteristics of electric vehicles, battery consumption is a crucial factor determining vehicle range; therefore, reducing the weight of automotive components is essential for reducing power consumption.

The new product, “WICOP UHL,” boasts 40% better heat dissipation performance than other products currently on the LED market. When applied to automotive headlights, it can reduce the weight of the heat dissipation structure by 75%. Furthermore, the WICOP UHL LED has a light-emitting area of ​​only 0.5 mm, making it suitable for ultra-thin designs. This new LED technology completely overcomes the disadvantage of reduced heat dissipation caused by reduced light-emitting area, while simultaneously meeting the demands for improved performance and ultra-thin designs.

WICOP is the foundation of this new product and is Seoul Semiconductor’s world-first patented unpackaged LED technology. Unlike flip-chip technology, which requires bonding during semiconductor processing, this technology allows for easy surface mounting (SMT) within the conventional substrate bonding process. Mini LED also utilizes this core technology, resulting in a robust structure.

“Based on the requirements of international headlight manufacturers, this new product will enter mass production starting in 2021,” said a representative from Seoul Semiconductor. “Our new product can be used in headlights for all automotive brands, not just electric vehicle headlights.”
