Datasheets have long been the source of LED specifications, widely used to narrow down choices and ultimately select the appropriate LED for a specific application. However, in many cases, factors not mentioned in the datasheet can significantly impact LED performance in an application, and in some situations, relying solely on the specifications in the datasheet can lead to incorrect conclusions. The LUXEON LED HL1Z, Lumileds’ latest high-power LED, is a prime example.

A customer developing a 25-degree focused lighting application is evaluating the LUXEON LED HL1Z and its competitors. As shown in the table below, when mounted on a circuit board, the competitor’s LED appears to be the best choice in terms of light output and intensity. However, in the application, the LUXEON LED HL1Z outperforms its competitors by 20% in lumens and by 40% in candela (light intensity).

This result is not accidental, but rather highlights the importance of a thorough understanding of the ultimate goal and the factors that may influence the outcome. The LUXEON LED HL1Z is extremely small, allowing for a close arrangement of LEDs, thus creating a smaller luminous area. Combined with the luminaire’s optical collection and collimation efficiency, the LUXEON LED HL1Z truly delivers optimal performance, although the performance may appear slightly lower on paper.

Lumleds has introduced a new CCT/CRI option, bringing the LUXEON LED HL1Z portfolio to 15 options. The emitter is only 1.4 mm on each side and 0.36 mm high, making it exceptionally compact. It delivers 133 lm of light flux at 4000K/80CRI and 350mA, and an luminous efficacy of 136 lm/W at 350mA, exhibiting excellent color space uniformity (CoA).
